Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter and printmaker who became one of the most important artists documenting the lively and unconventional culture of the Parisian avant-garde. He often felt a stronger connection with the performers, entertainers, and outsiders of the Montmartre district. He became especially famous for creating striking and daring posters for the Moulin Rouge, helping to raise commercial lithography to the level of fine art. His work was recognised for its quick, expressive lines and large areas of flat colour, which vividly conveyed the atmosphere and movement of the Belle Époque period
