Henry Moore is an internationally celebrated English sculptor whose large bronze and stone works, depicting abstracted human forms, made him one of the leading figures of twentieth-century modernism. Guided by the avant-garde doctrine of ‘truth to material’, Moore favoured direct carving over the traditional method of modelling and casting, allowing the material itself to participate in shaping the final work. He fused abstract human forms with organic shapes drawn from bones, pebbles, and eroded rock formations, using openings and empty spaces to create a dynamic interplay of light, space, and volume. Strongly influenced by nature and ancient artistic traditions, Moore’s sculptures often appear as though they have been naturally shaped by wind and weather over time. Siting his monumental works in landscapes and public squares, he connected sculpture with the natural environment, making him an artist that played in role in shaping modern public art.
