Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist who later became one of the most important and influential painters in the history of Western art, even though he achieved very little financial success while he was alive. Guided by strong emotions and a highly personal artistic style, he moved beyond traditional painting method and became known for his vivid colours and expressive, energetic brushstrokes. His instinct of colour and gesture would go on to shape Fauvism and German Expressionism, movements that recognised his work as a new visual language built on feeling rather than fact. Van Gogh revolutionised how are communicates emotion, shifting painting from visual description to raw psychological expression; he abandoned realism to convey mood.
