Henri Matisse was a groundbreaking French artist who transformed the way colour and shape were understood in modern art. As one of the main figures associated with Fauvism, Matisse was renowned for his large-scale, ornamental, and emotive paintings built upon colour. Over the course of his career, Matisse worked in several forms of art – including painting, sculpture, and collage – constantly pursuing what he described as a sense of balance, simplicity, and calm in his work. He is consequently celebrated as the orchestrator of tonal harmonies, capable of distilling a form to its essential with colour and form. Although his works appear to have been executed with effortless ease, Matisse cautioned that this effect was only an “apparent simplicity”. In reality, he laboured exactingly to achieve the “art of balance, of purity, and serenity.” By reducing complex subjects into simple yet energetic designs, Matisse produced joyful compositions, uniting colour and line.
